Awards and Honors

Michael J. Siegel, OD, in Budd Lake, was named one of the Favorite Kids’ Docs in New Jersey Family magazine.

Richard Ames, OD, in Oshkosh, was named Optometrist of the Year at the annual meeting of the Wisconsin Optometric Association.

Millicent Knight, OD, in Evanston, IN, was recognized in the Evanston Review for her approach to using nutrition and cutting-edge technology to care for her patients’ overall health and habits to contribute to better eye health.

Corinne Odineal, OD, FCOVD, of Auburn, Calif., was among the 14 ODs who completed the certification process and were inducted as Board Certified Fellows (FCOVD) at the College of Optometrists in Vision Development 43rd Annual Meeting in October.

Benjamin Waldo, OD, and Janna Scofield, OD, of Vancouver, WA, were recognized in The Reflector Extra for celebrating five years in practice.

Tracy Optometry was honored as Business of the Year by the Tracy (Calif.) Chamber of Commerce. The Vision Source® member doctors are David Moline, OD, FAAO, and Brian Yee, OD.

Vision Source® member doctors swept the field at the Nebraska Optometric Association Annual Fall Convention in September:

  • Optometrist of the Year went to Robert Vandervort, OD, affiliated with a Vision Source® practice in Council Bluffs, Iowa
  •  Christopher Wolfe, OD, FAAO, of Omaha, was awarded Young Optometrist of the Year.
  • Corey Langford, OD, of Omaha, and a past president of the association, was honored as Keyperson.
  • Chad Hudnall, OD, of St. Paul and Grand Island, serves as president., and Darren Wright, OD, of Auburn, is the incoming president.
  • Victoria Gengenbach, OD, of Grant, and Amy DeVries, OD, of Fremont, received the Leadership awards.

J. Gregory Ford, OD, of Grand Rapids, and Paul Hodge, OD, FAAO, of Allegan, began their terms as president and president-elect, respectively, of the Michigan Optometric Association.

Kathryn Beckman, OD, of Lodi, CA, was featured this summer on the cover of Her Life, a magazine in California’s Central Valley.

Brad Bodkin, OD, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, was featured on LIVE 5 News on WCSC for helping victims of the Moore, OK tornado. Dr. Bodkin donated a portion of his eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lens sales to the Red Cross in June to support relief efforts.

Nicole Rush Erenfeld, OD, in Bandon, Coquille and Gold Beach, was the recipient of the Agost-Minnick Award from the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association. Her father, John Rush, OD, presented her the award on behalf of the OOPA.

Taylor McMullen, OD, of Scottsdale, AZ, was interviewed on the television show The List talking about the importance of UV protection.

Stephen Kepley, OD, of Vero Beach, FL, became president of the Florida Optometric Association.

Brent Segeleon, OD, of Williamsburg, received the Vanguard of the Year award from the Virginia Optometric Association.

Maryland Optometric Association (MOA) President John Burns, OD, of Clinton, and President-elect Tracie King, OD, of Elkridge, worked diligently to push for the success of an MOA-sponsored legislation that was supported by optometrists, ophthalmologists and opticians. When the law takes effect on April 1, 2014, inequitable provisions commonly found within most vision provider contracts will be unlawful. Among them are provisions that force providers to discount services and materials not covered by the insurance plan. It will also prevent an insurer from forcing a provider to participate with its discount vision plan as a condition of participation on the same insurer’s major medical provider network.

Kent Yount, OD, of Littleton, received the Optometrist of the Year recognition from the Colorado Optometric Association.

Mitchell T. Munson, OD, FAAO, of Highland Ranch, CO, became the president of the American Optometric Association (AOA) in June.

Dori Carlson, OD, of Park River, ND, completed her role on the AOA Board of Trustees and as immediate past president. Dr. Carlson was also the third recipient of the Kamelia Massih Prize for a Distinguished Optometrist, which she received at Pacific University’s graduate Commencement ceremony.

David Nelson, OD, of Madison, WI, was featured in the Executive Q&A column of the Wisconsin State Journal for his work as an entrepreneur and with genetic testing to predict early diagnosis of macular degeneration.

The new roster of officers for SECO includes James Herman, OD, president-elect, of Hurricane, WV.

Ted McElroy, OD, treasurer, of Tifton, GA Vision Source OD earlier reported that Darby Chaisson, OD, has become president.

John E. Ellis, OD, of Connellsville, PA, held a Customer Appreciation Week in early June to celebrate his practice’s 20 years, as reported in the Daily Courier.

Karen Rosen, OD, of St. Louis, MO, was featured in the Spring 2013 issue of UMSL Magazine.

Stephen Rice, OD, of Nixa, Ozark and Springfield, MO, received recognition from his Vision Source region for his outstanding leadership.

Jon Forché, OD, of Atlanta, GA, recently became a Diplomat of the American Board of Optometry.

Dennis Kuwabara, OD, of Honolulu, was honored as Philanthropist of the Year by Optometry Giving Sight.

James Herman, OD, of Hurricane, was named Optometrist of the Year by the West Virginia Association of Optometric Physicians.

At its annual meetinglate last year, Mark Shirey, OD, of Mobile, became president of the Alabama Optometric Association.

Gina M. Wesley, OD, MS, FAAO, of Medina, MN, will be the inaugural recipient of the Early Professional Achievement award from The Ohio State University College of Optometry Alumni Association. She will receive the award during October’s homecoming celebration.

Mescher, OD, of Hibbing, MN, was selected as the Titan of Taconite, an honorary title given by the town to a member who has made a significant contribution.

Dave Drotzmann, OD, was elected as mayor of Hermiston, OR.

Ryne Wood, OD, of Leet Eye Care in Cape Girardeau, MO, was featured in the Southeast Missourian’s Who’s Who 2013 story.

Vision Source’s Kelly Kersick, OD, was presented with the Young Alumni Award at Southern College and Optometry.

Pavan Avinashi, OD, was honored by the British Columbia Association of Optometrists as the 2013 Young Optometrist of the Year.

Darby Chiasson, OD, of Cut Off, LA, was installed as president of SECO International in March.
